Axios Shares the Story Behind Energetic Exotics

From a Big Bet to a Growing Luxury Business

Energetic Exotics founders Marlon and Jessica Wentworth were featured in Axios Tampa Bay in a story exploring the risk that launched their business, the growth that followed, and their efforts to help other aspiring entrepreneurs avoid having to build their businesses alone.

The story begins in 2019, when Marlon and Jessica walked into a Tampa dealership with their life savings and an ambitious idea: bring the luxury car rental experience they had seen thriving in Miami to Tampa Bay.

To turn that idea into reality, they made a significant personal investment.

The couple used $150,000 from their retirement funds to purchase a Mercedes-Maybach, betting on the belief that Tampa had room for the type of premium automotive experience they wanted to create.

At the time, there was no guarantee the idea would succeed. Five years later, that first Maybach remained part of a much larger Energetic Exotics operation.

Growing Beyond the First Maybach

By the time of the Axios feature, Marlon and Jessica owned 12 additional luxury vehicles and brokered access to more than 100 vehicles across four Florida locations.

What started with a single car had developed into a growing chauffeur and luxury rental service, demonstrating that the market Marlon and Jessica believed existed in Tampa was very real.

But the article isn't only about the growth of Energetic Exotics. It also looks at what the Wentworths learned while building it.

Marlon acknowledges that while their original risk ultimately paid off, having access to experienced guidance could have made the early stages of the business significantly smoother.

That experience has influenced what the couple is doing next.

Helping Tampa Entrepreneurs Move Forward

After building Energetic Exotics without the mentorship they wished they had early on, Marlon and Jessica began looking for opportunities to share what they had learned with other entrepreneurs.

In 2023, they started partnering with Tampa Entrepreneurs, a nonprofit focused on supporting the local entrepreneurial community.

Through the partnership, Energetic Exotics became involved in sponsoring free community events and providing professional mentorship to people working to develop their own businesses.

The initiative gave the Wentworths an opportunity to turn the lessons from their own entrepreneurial journey into practical support for others facing similar challenges.

Going “Full Throttle”

Axios also highlighted Energetic Exotics' involvement in Tampa Entrepreneurs' Full Throttle event, scheduled for March 2024.

Energetic Exotics was set to play a central role in the event, showcasing vehicles from its luxury fleet and offering attendees rides on the raceway.

The collaboration brought together two important parts of the Wentworths' story: the automotive business they had spent years building and their growing commitment to supporting Tampa's entrepreneurial community.

Sharing the Lessons Behind the Growth

One of the clearest lessons Marlon shared with Axios was the importance of collaboration.

Building a company doesn't necessarily have to mean figuring everything out independently. Connecting with other businesses, speaking with experienced people, and inviting others to understand your vision can provide knowledge and support that may otherwise take years to develop.

It's a lesson shaped directly by the Wentworths' own experience.

They began Energetic Exotics by taking a substantial financial risk on themselves and their idea. Years later, having successfully grown beyond that first Maybach, they are using those experiences to help other entrepreneurs approach their own ambitions with greater support.

The Axios feature captures both sides of that journey: the risk required to build Energetic Exotics and the desire to make the path a little easier for the entrepreneurs who come next.
